Enough was enough. First, Gabrielle was avoiding her. Then Rachel convinced herself that she didn't want to see Gabby and at some point, avoiding each other had just become habit. Rachel cared too much about her friendship with Gabrielle to let it stay that way. She couldn't let herself lose another friendship. Not because of her own stupid actions on a stupid, drunken, night. She just couldn't.

Rachel fought for her friends.

It took awhile to figure out, but eventually, Rachel decided to just camp out at the statue of Hera whenever she had spare time. She knew Gabby frequented it, sooner or later she'd turn up. So it was on a fairly regular basis that Rachel found herself, with school books or jewelry projects or whatever she pulled off the bookshelf to keep herself occupied. Sometimes, she even did her work-outs there. She almost always had food and she always stayed as long as she possibly could. Sooner or later, Gabrielle would come, this was her place, she talked about it a lot. She would come.

And maybe then Rachel could finally apologize.

If asked, Gabrielle wasn't avoiding Rachel. But even she knew she was lying to herself. She knew she needed to talk to her friend about what had happened at the rave, even Aphrodite had agreed when Gabrielle had told her about it. But realizing she loved someone off the island was a whole lot easier then realizing she was starting to feel the same way for someone on the island.

And Gabrielle liked to think she was a brave person, that she would rather face things then let them linger unsaid. But this was proving harder then she thought, until it was easier to just avoid Rachel. Even if she missed her best island friend something awful.

Usually when Gabrielle went to the statue of Hera, it was so she could sit and write in her journal, which was full of letters to Xena, telling her about the island and what she'd learned about and from the people here. But she'd found herself coming to the statue less since the rave, since she didn't know quite how to put her feelings into words. She knew Xena would probably never read the journal but it was still hard metaphorically telling the women she loved about the feelings she had for another. And when she sat down to write, unless she was extremely focused, that's all she could think about.

It really didn't surprise her when she decided to go to the statue to write today and saw Rachel waiting for her. She paused only briefly, hand gripping her staff until her knuckles were white as she gathered up her courage. "Hello Rachel."

"You've been looking for me?" Gabrielle asked, actually a bit surprised. It wasn't that she didn't think Rachel would be looking for her, especially since Gabrielle had been avoiding her, it was just a surprise.

She kept walking up and moved to sit next to her, her legs tucked under her skirt. "What...what can I do for you?" She knew exactly what needed to be talked about, but she too was at a lose for words.

"Oh. I'm sorry." The apology was for both Rachel's searching and her avoidance. She couldn't help it.

"Oh Rachel..." Gabrielle looked towards the forest, not wanting to meet her gaze. "It's alright. You don't need to apologize." She swallowed before she looked down at her hands in her lap as she tried to find the words to explain. This conversation really wasn't going to be easy.

"I...I had my reasons for leaving."

Gabrielle didn't even want to think about what this conversation would be like if something had happened. The point was it hadn't. For the best. Hopefully.

"I...I knew that. I wanted to help you. I would have even if I had felt more like myself."

She sighed sadly and then gave Rachel a soft smile. "I was. Into it, as you put it. But I meant what I was saying too, Rachel. When it dawned on me how much I meant it...I couldn't stay." It had felt too much like a betrayal so someone who wasn't even on the island. And it would have been wrong to take advantage of Rachel like that, when she didn't feel the same way.

Gabrielle quickly shook her head as she looked back up at Rachel with sympathetic eyes. "Don't worry. Please. I didn't even know, how could you? And when I did...I couldn't do that to you. It wouldn't have been right."

Finally she reached out and put a hand on Rachel's knee. "Please, I know you don't feel the same way. That's okay. Nothing has to change." She really hoped that she hadn't lost everything. Rachel was still her best friend and that was what was important.

“You won’t.” Gabrielle reassured her with a smile and squeeze from the hand still resting on Rachel’s knee. “I know that. Don’t even worry about it, everything will be fine.” And she completely believed that. She’d spent years on the road with Xena, going through the extremes of thick and thin. If she could survive that, she could survive whatever the island tried to do to her. And if something happened, it wouldn’t be Rachel’s fault.

"Rachel." Gabrielle spoke firmly, wanting her friend's complete attention. "I don't care what you think might happen or you might do. I have complete faith in you, which is why I'm not worried." It was her gift and her curse at times but it was the truth. It had worked with Xena and she had to believe it would work with Rachel.

But then her expression soften again and she reached out to take Rachel's hand. "Of course we're still friends. As for the rest...let me worry about that."

Gabrielle just smiled. "Good, that's what I like to hear." She squeezed Rachel's hand again comfortingly. "Just relax. Everything will work out, you'll see." For better or for worse, they were friends and it would take something more drastic then the rave to change that.

Instead of replying in the affirmative again, Gabrielle just kept smiling.

Then she took leaned back against the statue and looked around her special spot, enjoying it's beauty once again. "It reminds me of home. Statues like this are everywhere in Greece." She explained simply.

"It is weird, to think I live hundreds of years before most of the people on the island. That everything I live is something you all learn about in history classes." Gabrielle shook her head, as she wondered, not for the first time, if perhaps some of her own stories had survived to help people better understand how they had lived in her time. Even if most of her stories centered around Xena.

"I hope you find someone worthy to tell your story." And Gabrielle meant it. A story needed a good storyteller to stand the test of time and it was why she made sure she kept improving her skills so Xena's stories would last forever.

"I suppose. Though I guess it also depends on how good a story is that will determine if it's retold over and over. Everyone loves an underdog after all." It was a far of Gabrielle's. What if some day, he scrolls about Xena fell into the wrong hands and were destroyed? Would the stories survive anyway? She'd like to think they would but it was impossible to know for sure.

"I like to think so." She shrugged slightly. "I guess time will tell."
