39 * Accidental video

[Someone's going through papers on a desk. It looked like it had been organized, once, but that organization had been gone. Rachel's muttering to herself, obviously trying to find something.]

I know it's in here somewhere - who the hell was going through this place...?

...Jesus, where's Bobby Drake when you need an accountant?

[She sees a piece of paper and grabs it.]

Ah-ha! Oh, wait, this is from last month's payroll. Where's...

Holy crap, is this Goodfellow's old tab?

[She shakes her head and goes back to looking.]

This is gonna take forever.

A hoot? What are you, from the 1920's?

[James glanced over the list.]

I think a few of these people have left, but I bet with the holidays people will be wanting to pick up extra shifts for some more money.

Stow it, future boy.

We're gonna need to hire aren't we?

[He took another look and nodded.]

Yeah, probably.

[Rachel's head sunk down to the desk.]

I'll put up a post, see if anyone bites.

[Kirk reached over and put a comforting hand on her shoulder.]

My suggestion? First thing we do is hire an office manager.

Any suggestions? Anyone you know might be interested?

I know maybe four people in the City fairly well and none of them are qualified for this sort of thing.

[Rachel wrote a note on a piece of paper.]

I'll add it to the list, then.

You want me to be the one to tell them that we're running the place until... something happens?

[There's a slightly scared look on her face.]

I will do all the paperwork for a week if you do it.

[Kirk gave her a reassuring smile.]

You don't have to do that, I'll take care of it.

So, I feel obliged to ask you this since you're my friend...

You want to talk about Brennan ditching you the other night?

[Rachel paused in her note-taking, tapping the pen lightly on her notepad.]

Shalimar needed him, they're... friends, I'd do the same for Kitty.

[Kirk paused, not sure how much to tell her.]

Yeah, of course she did...

[She looks at him, she caught that pause.]

What?

[Kirk shook his head.]

She didn't really need him. He... needed her. She was less than 100% and Brennan couldn't stand to not be there when she's like that. When she hung up the phone with me she was in high spirits. Brennan is an alright guy but he and Shalimar have an almost parasitic relationship, and no one will ever be #1 in their life but each other.

...so wait, you're okay with that, aren't you?

[Kirk gave another shrug.]

We've come a long way, and there are some things I don't like that I'm working on with her and some things I don't like that just aren't worth bringing up. Did you know they share a bed?

[very long pause]

Shalimar mentioned it.

[Kirk sighed and ran a hand through his head.]

Look, you're a big girl and can make your own choices. But Brennan knows that eventually he and Shalimar end up together in their world. She's told him that. I'm not a happily ever after, gets the girl and has the picket fence kind of guy. I'm not even a long term relationship type of guy. Outside of this weird situation with the City, Shalimar and I never would have had this type of relationship.

But you? You're not that way, I can tell. You want someone to spend forever with. Brennan? He wants Shalimar to spend forever with and you will always, always be second place to her.

[A pause.]

And personally I think you deserve more than that.

[She leans back, getting a little defensive.]

You think I'm looking for forever here? Seriously? After having the front-row to Anita and Reeve? Kitty and Kaidan? I'd be crazy.

I don't know what this is, I'm not even sure why I started it, but I do know that when I'm with him - part of that gaping hole in me gets a little smaller and a little easier to deal with.

[Kirk raised his hands in a defensive gesture.]

Alright, alright. If he makes you happy... then good.

I am. Happy.

[She doesn't exactly sound convinced, there are obviously things on her mind.]

Well then good.

[Kirk grinned, even though he wasn't sure he believed her.]

Why don't you head out. I'll stay a few minutes putting this place back together as much as I can.
